Here's a good laundry detergent recipe you may want to try.
This recipe requires the following ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 1/3 bar of inexpensive soap, grated
- 1/2 cup washing (not baking) soda
- 1/2 cup of Borax
- 5-gallon pail for mixing
- 3 gallons water
This soap works just as well as the store bought brand and you'll have no problem getting your clothes clean. The quality of the wash is the same in both instances. This particular recipe costs about 2 cents per load compared to the average $.20 per load of a store bought detergent.
Making your own detergent is a great way to save money doing the wash and the only other choice would be to use no detergent at all. With a 90% savings, why not give this new detergent a try? You can make 3 gallons worth of detergent and it smells great.
If you don't want to make your own soap, there is one more alternative. For lightly soiled clothing, you can use half the store bought detergent you normally use and you will find there is no difference in how your clothes get clean. With the concentrated detergents available on the market, using half the detergent does not take away from their ability to perform. Using a small amount of detergent on lightly soiled clothes will give them the fresh smell you want out of your wash.
