Maintaining Your Gas Furnace

Maintaining Your Gas Furnace
Performing regular maintenance and upkeep on your gas furnace includes many separate, yet easy, tasks that will ensure its continued optimum performance. In order for a gas furnace to work properly and run as efficiently as possible, you must make sure you do the maintenance that is required for your specific unit.

There are some tasks that should be performed on a monthly basis, while having a gas furnace inspection by a licensed HVAC contractor can be done annually.

One of the simplest things you can do to keep your gas furnace operating efficiently is make sure that all registers (supply and return) are not blocked or covered by furniture, rugs or drapery. Often times, especially in homes with children, registers become blocked with items such as toys, clothes or books. Blocked registers will cause your gas furnace to work harder than normal to heat your home, costing you more money in your energy bills. In order for your heating system to run efficiently, every register should be allowed unrestricted airflow.

It is important that owners of a gas furnace inspect the gas vents. If the flue gas vents are blocked with leaves, plants or debris, the carbon monoxide can be forced back into the home.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that must be expelled from the home to prevent potentially hazardous conditions for you and your family. Making sure your gas vents are free of debris will ensure that the carbon monoxide can safely escape your home.

Your gas furnace's air filters should be replaced on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. The air filter protects the furnace from dust and debris such as pet hair and dirt. When the filter becomes clogged, airflow is restricted and your furnace will have to work extremely hard to heat your home. Furnace filters are available in different degrees of filtration, however, it is usually a good idea to by a cheaper filter and change it once a month rather than buying an expensive filter and changing in bimonthly. The cheaper filters can adequately remove the dust particles and, with regular replacement, keep your furnace running efficiently.

Be sure to keep your thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Lowering your thermostat by even one or two degrees can make a significant reduction on your energy bills. Keeping your home within the "comfort zone" of 63-68 degrees will help you maintain a heated home without making your HVAC system work too hard.

Finally, have an experienced, licensed HVAC contractor perform an annual inspection of your gas furnace. This inspection is usually done before the winter months to ensure you will have efficient heat. HVAC contractors will make all necessary adjustments to your gas unit and assess the condition of your furnace to identify any potential problems.

Performing regular maintenance on your gas furnace is important and beneficial to you as a homeowner and bill payer. Not only will you prolong the life of your gas furnace, but you'll also make certain that your unit is running as efficiently as possible and saving you money on your energy bills.
