The following are some of the aspects that need to be taken into account as well as some DIY tips for replacing hinges:
What Hinges are Being Replaced?
If you are changing the hinges on a door, you may find it very difficult to do without help. You should have someone there to help you switch them out. Doors can be very heavy and can cause injury if they fall and there is no one there to hold the door in place. Cabinets can be replaced with one person but it is easier if there are two.
Match the Existing Hinge to the New One
This is one of the best tips to replacing hinges. If you match the hinges perfectly, you do not have to worry about fit. This can save a great deal of time. When the new hinges are a different size then you have to drill new holes and plug the old ones up. That can be time consuming but it is not always possible to get hinges that match perfectly if the existing ones are very old.
Hinges That Do Not Match
If you cannot get hinges that match perfectly then you need to purchase some putty. For wood frames that are not painted over or for wood cabinets, you need to get wood putty that matches the stain or wood of the frames. All DIY stores have this putty. If the frame is painted over you can use standard wall putty. Fill in the holes with putty and allow it to harden. Sand it down to the level of the frame. Drill new holes for your hinges.
Hang The Door/Cabinets
This is where it is really important to have an extra set of hands. You need to have someone hold the door/cabinet while you are installing the hinges to the new holes in the frame. If you measure correctly, your hinges should go in easily. Start at the top and work your way down when screwing them in. The hinges on the top can help to keep the door/cabinets in place while you work.
There is nothing more to replacing hinges easily. As long as you follow the tips above, the job should not take more than a couple of hours. Do not call a contractor to replace your hinges when it is quite easy to do on your own.
